About Mrityunjaya and Ayush Homa :

There are 400 yagyas described in the Vedas. (As you know Vedicfolks offering 280+ Homa’s)Of these, 21 are deemed compulsory for the Twice-Born (Dvijas: Brahmin, Ksatriya and Vaisya). They are also called nityakarmas. The rest of the yagyas are optional, which are performed kamyakarma (for particular wishes and benefits). The Aupasana is not part of the above list, but is also compulsory . Maha Mrityunjaya Homam and Ayush Homam are two among nityakarmas should perform frequently or yearly once as per Vedas.

Mrityunjaya Homam is performed by chanting the Maha Mrityunjaya(The Great Death Destroyer) mantra as described in the Rig Veda. This ancient mantra has the power to invoke three different aspects of Shiva: Rudra, Tryambaka and Mrityunjaya. Therefore, Mrityunjaya Homam serves as a life giver, health enhancer, energy booster and life protector.

Ayush Homa is performed to worship the “God of Life” (Ayur Devata). Generally this homa is performed once a year to help us achieve bestows longevity and Good Health. 

•    Mahamrityunjaya Homa is one among the oldest and most important Homa in Indian mythology and spirituality.
•    ‘Maha’, which means great, ‘Mrityun’ means death and ‘Jaya’ means victory, which turns into conquer or victory over death.
•    It is said to beneficial for mental, emotional and physical health and to be a moksha mantra, which bestows longevity and immortality.
•    According to some puranas, the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra Homa has been used by many Rishis as well as Sati during the time when Chandra suffered from the curse of Prajapati Daksha.


According to Vedic scriptures, Mrityunjaya & Ayush Deva gives ways for extending the life span of a person by reducing the perils in life.

About Pradosahm Vrat or Pradosham: Pradosham means “Dusk time” or Pra means “remover” Dosha means “inauspicious things or Karma”.
