In Northern India
Krishna Janmashtami celebrations are at peak in various cities like Mathura, Brindavan, Goa and Gujarat. People from all parts of India come to these places to take part in Janmashtami celebrations. Various arrangements were made and especially in Krishna Temples are decorated with flowers and colorful lighting. On this day, most of the people were gather together large in numbers especially in temples and participate in festivities which continue the whole day of Janmashtami. Dancing, songs, drama performances, pooja rituals, and Aarti are the main thing of Janmashtami festivities.
The Birth Place of Lord Krishna – Mathura:
Mathura, the land of Lord Krishna. Here apart from Rasa ila and Jhanki Pradarshan on Janmashtami, Jhula Utsav is one of the exclusive events that will take place in celebrations. You will find very large swings placed in the courtyard of the temples on every Janmashtami.
Brindavan(Vrindavan),Uttar Pradesh :
Lord Krishna spent his entire childhood by playing with his brother Balarama and his friends in the lands of Brindavan(Vrindavan). In Brindavan, the whole city is glowing with colorful lights and celebrates with crackers, distributing sweets and sharing joy and enthusiasm among the people of Brindavan for celebrating Janmashtami is immense!
Dwaraka, Gujarat :
Dwarka is the kingdom of Lord Krishna. The grand Dwarkadish temple is beautifully adorned with different types of flowers and colourful lighting of different kinds. Later on the very day of Janmashtami, the prasadam is made which consists of 56 items i.e, Milk, Makhan (white butter), Mishari Makhan, Dhaniya Panjiri and so on…these are the prasadham where Lord Krishna loved . It is often termed as " Chappan Bhog".
Celebrations in Goa:
Goa is the amalgam of various cultures and traditions. Hence, this festival is celebrated with different kinds across the state. Women in the house, put colourful Rangoli in front of their house and decorate the Krishna statue with flowers in the early morning. However chanting mantras and doing Bhajans, distributing of milk and Dahi as a prasadam is common across the state.
Celebrations in Jammu:
In Jammu, people celebrate by taking a part in kite flying on this auspicious day. On this day, they spread happiness with each other by kite flying.
In Eastern India
In eastern states of Odisha and West Bengal, people celebrate Krishna Janmashtami by take fasting and worshipping the whole day for Lord Krishna. Purana Pravachana is organized from the “Bhagavata Maha Puranam”. On the next day, people participate in the “Nandha Utsav” and offering sweets to share each other and spreading happiness on the whole day.
In Maharashtra
In Maharashtra state and particularly from the top of the cities like Mumbai and Pune, Krishna Janmashtami or Gokulashtami is celebrated as “Dahi Handi”.Dahi Handi is an event in which a human pyramid is formed which tries to break an earthen pot filled with buttermilk, which it can tie at a convenient height. A lot of the humans make a human pyramid step by step slowly and finally only one person standing at the top of the human pyramid. The topmost person in the human pyramid tries to break the pot which is filled with buttermilk. The participants of “Dahi Handi” are called as Govindha Troops. And finally, the buttermilk filling pot is broken.After that gifts and cash prizes are offered to these participants.
In Southern India
People who like Lord Krishna in South India celebrates Krishna Jayanthi instead of Janmashtami with great joy and fervor. They decorate their houses with manjal(Turmeric)and Kunguma(red) which can be used to apply that in the front door. They sing some devotional songs in praise of Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna’s idols are decorated with flowers and make some buttermilk to Krishna. People offer sweets and fruits to Lord Krishna. Some of the important sweets are Seedai, and Verkadalai Urundai, Puttu etc. Most of the people take fasting on this day. Little & Young children are dressed like Lord Krishna. Women draw tiny footprints outside their house doors and kitchen walking towards their house, a symbolism for Krishna's journey into their homes.
