Pradosham Vrat or Pradosham

About Pradosahm Vrat or Pradosham:

Pradosham means “Dusk time” or Pra means “remover” Dosha means “inauspicious things or Karma”. Pradosham occurs twice in a month and this occasion on the 13th day of every fortnight in the hindu calendar. This Pradosham is mainly worship of Hindu god the destroyer lord Shiva. The Propitious 3 Hour period, while the devotion starts 1.5 hours before sunset and balance 1.5 hours for after sunset. After sunset is a good time to worship Lord Shiva. On that time, a devotee should wear Rudraksha,Viboothi(thiruneeru) and worship Lord Shiva by abishekam, Sandal paste and mainly Vilva leaves, Fragrance, Deepam & Neivaedyaas (Food offerings). It is believed that worshipping Lord Shiva on the day of Pradosham will relieve from all the sins and gives Moksha.

History of pradosham:

According to Hindu Puranas, the gods (Devas) and the demons (Asuraas) were stirring the milky ocean to pluck amirdham(nectar) with Vasuki (the serpent king) as a rope. As vasuki had severe scratches due to the churning and it cant able to do further.On that time suddenly, she emitted a powerful poison which is come from his(vasuki) mouth for the capable of destroying the world. All are fear on that time.If vasuki split the poison definitely all over the world surrounded fully by poison. On the time, the helpless celestials sue worship to Lord Shiva to save them. In order to save all of them, Lord Shiva swallowed the poison comes out from Vasuki’s Mouth. Suddenly Goddess Parvati came here to stopped the poison to press and keep the hand in Lord Shiva’s throat and but unfortunately it is believed that his throat turned to blue.

But in case, Goddess Parvati not stopped the poison in Lord Shiva’s Throat, it spread into the whole body and the whole body turns into blue in color and also Lord Shiva losing his mind soon. As a result of this, Lord Shiva came to be known as “Thiruneelakandan” or “Neelakandan” (the one with Blue Throat). It is said that on the Tryodsi (13th moon day) day, the gods and demons realized that they had committed a sin of not praying the God Lord Shiva and prayed for their forgiveness. Lord Shiva forgave them and then danced in between the horns of the Nandhi’s (Celestial Bull) forehead. That time is called as “Pradosham”. It is believed that if anybody prays Lord Shiva in that time, he will definitely fulfill their wishes and gives them Mukthi.
